A friend recommended that I check out two of her favorite authors at JLF. Here’s what she has to say:
Colm Toibin
Toibin beautifully captures the inner emotions and psychology of his characters. Brooklyn deals with the true meaning of “home” while Nora Webster focuses on how we may deal with life transitions. Toibin’s skill is how to tell wonderful stories behind a simple narratives. Both books have a base in Enniscorthy, Ireland, which is Toibin’s home.
Tales of the City began as a newspaper serial and became a TV series. It is San Francisco in 1976 and deals with homosexuality and cannabis through the eyes of an innocent young secretary from Cleveland (Laura Linney). Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) is the pot growing landlady at 28 Barberry Lane and the glue of the series. The characters are so wonderful that we want to know what happens to them as their lives move on. Maupin obliges by publishing several post-series novels to let us know. The series culminated with The Days of Anna Madrigal, when she is 92.
