Tuesday was transfer day, driving south from Broadway to Portsmouth. The harbor fortifications date back to Henry VII (c. 1500), built as part of England’s endless wars against the French. Portsmouth’s ancient/modern cathedral has bits from every century since its 12th century beginnings, making for some pleasing but rather odd juxtapositions.
We caught the ferry with encountering French cannon fire, hooking up with Alan and Jane for several days on the Isle of Wight. Our first views were stunning.
We’re lodging in a stable near Freshwater, along with Alan and Jane. (The horses never had it so good.)
Gorgeous coastline on the Isle’s western side, followed by tea at the pirate-themed Spyglass Inn at Ventnor.
