North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Thursday we took a trip down nostalgia lane – er, railway.  We boarded the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Whitby and rode to Pickering and back (more or less) with stops and walking breaks in between.

The steam locomotive reminded me of a dragon: smoke came seeping from its mouth and its belly rumbled. There was a whistle, a whoo and a hiss and we were off.

We traveled in vintage coaches from different eras on each leg of the journey.

This heritage line is operated entirely by volunteers (mostly of the silver-haired variety).

If this scene look vaguely familiar, pinch up a bit of flue dust and transport yourself to the train headed back to Howard’s for the beginning of term.

Goathland Station (aka Hogsmeade Station)

We disembarked at Goathland for a 3 mile circular walk to Mallyan Spout (which either wasn’t spotting or we missed it).

The ride from Goathland to Pickering took us across a bit of the North York Moors.

We lunched at Botham’s of Whitby in Pickering.

Re-boarding the train, we travelled back to Goathland Station and got off to walk a bit of the old Whitby-Scarborough railway line (now a rail trail) to Grosmont Station.

Railway glamping – you can rent rail cars fitted out as holiday stays.

We had time to kill art Grosmont before the next (boring) modern train arrived to take us back to Whitby.

Two pints of shandy went down just fine at the Grosmont Station Tavern.

We ended the day with a superb fish dinner at the Magpie Cafe.
