Victoria & Albert’s Footsteps – Osborne House

Thursday afternoon was spent at Osborne House, Victoria & Albert’s cozy family home. (Ahem.)

After becoming Empress of India, the Queen became fascinated by all things Indian. Some scenes from Victoria and Abdul, with Judi Dench as Herself, were recently filmed here. The Durbar Room is over the top, even by Victorian and Rajasthani standards.

The Downstairs aesthetic is a trifle Downscale.

Albert was the nurturing parent. His loving touches are evident in everything from toys to the swimming beach to playhouses (the size of a US single family home) to artistic renderings of the family dogs.

The lovely grounds, laid out by Albert, are now open for families of a different class.

Victoria & Albert’s parish church, St. Mildred’s, was also designed by Prince Albert. It is lovingly staffed by volunteers who seem old enough to remember the Royal Couple.
